The Old Bell holds within its walls over 375 years of woeful history, but none as heartbreakingly haunting as the tale of Mable, an 18th century linen maid whose job was to strip the beds, wash the sheets and replace bedding with fresh linen each day.
One drunken night, Mabel’s lover had one too many drinks with passing soldiers looking to recruit men for the war and he became so terribly inebriated that he stole the Kings shilling, in other words, he signed up to war and was taken away immediately.
Not long after he left he was tragically killed at war but the tragedy doesn’t end there. Mable soon found out that she was pregnant with his child and consumed by grief she hanged herself in room 29 which remains to this day the most haunted room of the then coaching inn.
Many report still hearing the eerie cries of heartbreak from Mable trapped in her own torment within the room to this day.
